Our co-founder grew up in Brooklyn, New York — an under-resourced, at-risk community where school funding gaps left critical developmental needs unmet. The school system she was part of wasn't built to serve children like her.
Then chess found her. An after-school chess program gave her something her school couldn't: structure, cognitive challenge, focused mentorship, and a reason to keep showing up. The game demanded that she think ahead, regulate her emotions under pressure, and persist through failure — skills the classroom never taught her.
Chess opened doors to scholarships. Scholarships opened doors to NYU. NYU opened doors to the world — despite every systemic barrier stacked against her from birth.
The Classical Chess Collegium was built so every child has access to that same transformative experience — regardless of zip code, household income, or school budget. We believe chess is not just a game. It is a cognitive development system hiding in plain sight, and we intend to make it available to every community that needs it.
